The longest and the most beautiful gorge in Europe. Wild scenery, vertical rocks 350 m. high, path length of 16klm, 5-6 hours walking.
In the heart of the Lefka Ori (White Mountains) and at an altitude of 1140 meters (3740 feet) lie the plateau of Omalos and the entrance of the famous Samaria Gorge.
It’s the longest and the most beautiful gorge of Europe with a 16 km (11 miles) walking path which takes approximately 5 – 6 hours to cross (including the necessary stops). The Gorge of Samaria is a National Park since 1962 and an UNESCO’s protected area, winning international distinctions.
You will be impressed by the unique landscape with vertical high rocks of 350 meters and by the narrowest point which is 3 meters wide. We walk along a unique forest with trees of a thousand years, we fill our bottles with pure natural water from the springs and we meet the Cretan goats Kri-Kri.
We walk at our own pace, not as a group. The hike ends at the seaside village of Agia Roumeli. We enjoy swimming in the refreshing Libyan Sea, we can have meal at some of the local taverns (not included in the price of the excursion) and in the afternoon we travel by boat to Chora Sfakion from where the bus will pick us up to return.
The crossing is not as difficult as you may think, it is always a downhill and 70% of the route is under the shade of trees and huge rocks. The Cretans say that if you cross the Gorge of Samaria is as if you have seen throughout Crete.
